A low monthly payment can attract attention, but it is not enough to choose a car-leasing contract. Consider how long you need the vehicle, your likely mileage and what would happen if your job, location or plans changed before the agreement ended.
Editorial correction: ALD Automotive and LeasePlan should no longer appear as separate alternatives in this comparison: their integration created Ayvens. We have withdrawn the earlier recommendations, unsupported claims about included chargers and blanket savings promises.
Understand what you are agreeing to
The Banco de España describes renting as hiring an asset for periodic payments while the provider retains ownership. Duration, coverage and termination terms depend on the agreement. Do not assume that several years of payments make the car yours or that every motoring expense is covered.
Ayvens’ integration information says existing ALD and LeasePlan contract terms continue during their validity. Existing customers should consult their own agreement and official service channels; this article does not change those terms.
Compare the same period and mileage
Start by writing down the number of months you need the car and a realistic mileage estimate. Request quotations for that same scenario. A different term or much smaller mileage allowance makes a headline price hard to compare, even for the same model.
- Payments: upfront amount, tax-inclusive monthly charge, initial fees and other compulsory payments.
- Mileage: allowance, excess-mileage charge and treatment of unused kilometres.
- Services: maintenance, repairs, tyres, assistance and a replacement vehicle, including conditions.
- Insurance: coverage, excess, authorised drivers and exclusions.
- Ending the agreement: early termination charges, vehicle return, damage and acceptable wear criteria.
- Use: overseas travel, restrictions and any required authorisations.
A simple way to organise the numbers
Illustrative example, not a commercial offer: 400 euros a month for 36 months totals 14,400 euros in monthly payments. An alternative at 370 euros for the same term with 2,000 euros upfront totals 15,320 euros. Taxes, included services, mileage and any additional charges still need to be matched.
When comparing with buying, use the same period and include financing, maintenance and other expected costs. Show estimated resale value separately because it is uncertain. The right choice depends on your use and how much you value keeping or returning the car.
Common questions
Does renting automatically create a tax saving?
Do not assume so. Avoid including deductions without checking your circumstances and the vehicle’s use with an adviser. This guide does not calculate personal or business taxes.
Does an electric car include a charger and charging costs?
Only count those services if their scope and cost are stated in the quotation. Ask separately about installation conditions and electricity charges.
