Comparing online accounts: providers, fees and protection

An online account may be convenient, but an attractive app is not enough to judge it. Start with three questions: who provides the account, what will you pay and what protection applies to the product?

Correction: the original Spanish article from 2024 presented “EcoBank”, “Banco TechFin” and “Banco Digital X” as leading choices without identifying verifiable offers in Spain. Parts of that text described them as concepts. The ranking has been withdrawn. This does not make a claim about any real company using a similar name.

Identify the legal provider

Find the entity named in the contract and the activity for which it is registered. The Banco de España register provides identities and activity categories. Do not assume that every feature inside one app is supplied by the same company.

Work out the cost of your own usage

Banco de España explains that the Fee Information Document follows a common format to help comparison. Read it with the account terms; a headline promising no subscription fee does not describe every possible charge.

  • List maintenance, card and delivery charges.
  • Check the transactions you need: cash withdrawals, transfers and currency exchange.
  • Ask what happens if you stop meeting a condition for discounted fees.
  • Separate one-off costs from recurring ones.

Fictional example: a €4 monthly charge plus a €20 annual card fee totals €68 a year before other transactions. This is not a real provider’s tariff; it shows why costs need a common time period.

Revolut as a documented example, not a ranked winner

The Revolut Standard fee schedule we consulted has specific conditions for cards, cash withdrawals and currency conversion. It uses its own exchange rate and may add transaction charges. The old blanket claim of exchange without margins or costs has therefore been removed.

Its deposit information describes Lithuanian protection of up to €100,000 per depositor and institution for eligible deposits, aggregating those held with Revolut Bank UAB. Do not extend that protection to every investment available in the app.

Make a choice you can explain

Can you meet the conditions? What would your usual transactions cost? How would you access your money and customer support? Keep the relevant documents and their dates. We do not name a universal winner or claim to have tested customer-service response times.
