Design studios in Valencia: portfolios and choosing a team

Graphic design work with a screen and colour samples

Choosing a design studio in Valencia starts with the problem you need to solve, not the most striking photograph. Packaging, a retail interior and a fashion project involve different processes. These three practices provide starting points for exploring approaches; this is not a ranking or a suggestion that their services are interchangeable.

CULDESAC: brands and retail spaces

CULDESAC’s website presents projects including WOW Concept, TOUS and HOFF, with work involving retail environments and identity. Its portfolio offers examples of a brand idea taking physical form. To assess a case, read the brief and the studio’s particular contribution alongside the finished photographs.

Lavernia & Cienfuegos: graphics, products and packaging

Lavernia & Cienfuegos describes itself as a multidisciplinary Valencia studio specialising in graphic, product and packaging design. Its historical documentation dates the studio’s origins to Nacho Lavernia in 1995, with Alberto Cienfuegos becoming a partner in 2000. Those dates should not be replaced with an unsupported 2002 founding claim.

When comparing packaging projects, ask which elements involved structure, graphics, materials or production. An attractive outcome may have been created under manufacturing constraints quite different from your own.

Estudio Savage: another creative approach

Estudio Savage’s website describes a creative team based in Valencia since 2010, with sections for projects, education and bespoke work. Look at its current output and ask which services fit your brief. Founder names, clients and dates should not be assumed when the official information does not establish them.

Reading a portfolio usefully

  • Look for projects with a problem and scale similar to yours.
  • Distinguish a concept proposal from a prototype or produced work.
  • Check the respective roles of the studio and its collaborators.
  • Ask about constraints, testing and decisions as well as appearance.

Discussing one relevant case can reveal more about the working method than browsing many images. Bring references and explain what interests you about them. Borrowing an aesthetic is not a substitute for identifying what the design needs to achieve.

Define the first commission clearly

Prepare a short brief covering the audience, scope, indicative budget, deadline and deliverables. Clarify revisions, final files, usage rights and coordination with manufacturers or other suppliers. Agree who approves each stage. That gives you a basis for comparing proposals by their substance and feasibility, without relying on labels such as “revolutionary” or “the best”.
