Start with the legal orientation service
Madrid’s bar association, ICAM, describes its Servicio de Orientación Jurídica as a public, free service operating by appointment. Its immigration section separates enquiries concerning nationality, expulsion and administrative authorisations, among other matters. Use the official page to find the section relevant to you.
Free orientation is different from being granted legal aid. Ask which service you are requesting and what evidence or eligibility checks apply. Booking an appointment does not mean a lawyer has already been assigned or an appeal has been filed.
Put any official notice first
Keep the complete decision, evidence of its receipt date and related documents ready. Mention any potential deadline when you first contact the service. Ask a professional to assess the appropriate action and timing: deadlines differ between procedures.
The ICAM page also retains notices for campaigns with specific dates. Check the date before relying on one: a reference to June 2026 does not establish that an application period remains open in September. This article does not announce an application window or decide whether you qualify.
Prepare for the first appointment
- Write a short timeline and describe the purpose of your enquiry in one sentence.
- Organise official correspondence and copies of previous applications.
- Bring the identity and personal-status documents requested when you arrange the appointment.
- Put questions in order of urgency: next action, deadline, missing evidence and the cost of any service you may hire.
Before sending sensitive documents, verify the recipient and ask which documents they need and how to provide them. Keep copies of submissions and acknowledgements.
Hiring a private firm
Check the responsible professional in the Censo General de Letrados. Request a written proposal separating the consultation, preparation, submission, follow-up and any appeal. Clarify who will answer questions, in which language and how updates will be handled.
Practical arrangements matter too. Ask whether the meeting is in person or online and whether the advertised address is where you will actually be seen. A central office or a large number of reviews cannot replace these checks.
