A massage business can look simple from the outside: a room, a treatment table and an appointment book. Running it also means preparing between visits, answering enquiries, cleaning, managing bookings and meeting expenses when the diary has gaps. Assessing a project calls for your own plan; a broad statement about the wellness industry proves neither local demand nor future profit.

Define exactly what the service offers
Describe the service clearly. This guide concerns relaxation massage and business planning, not erotic services. Relaxation services should also be distinguished from healthcare. The Madrid College of Physiotherapists explains that physiotherapists are university-trained health professionals whose work extends beyond massage.
If your plan includes physiotherapy or another healthcare activity, check the applicable professional qualifications and authorisations. The Community of Madrid publishes the health-centre procedure. A massage-course certificate should not be presented as equivalent to a healthcare qualification. Also ask the local council about the proposed use of the premises.
Capacity is not the same as opening hours
Consider a fictional example: you have six hours available for appointments, each session lasts 45 minutes and another 15 minutes is reserved to prepare for the next one. That gives a maximum of six appointments in that block, not eight. It assumes every slot is filled and there are no delays. It is not a forecast of bookings or income.
Make your own calculation after allowing for breaks, administration and cleaning. Then test what happens with gaps between bookings or a cancellation. A realistic diary prevents the budget from depending on perfect occupancy.
Collect costs before setting prices
- Starting up: fitting out the space, furniture, equipment and applicable opening expenses.
- Running the business: rent, staffing, insurance, utilities, laundry, cleaning, maintenance and administration.
- Each appointment: products and consumables, payment fees and working time.
Obtain quotes, record payment dates and separate confirmed amounts from estimates. Revenue is not profit: costs and other obligations remain to be covered. The Business Plan tool can help organise scenarios. Review the figures and tax treatment with an adviser familiar with the intended activity.
Clear booking arrangements are part of the service
Explain the duration, price, inclusions, cancellation terms and contact channels before confirming a booking. Agree the boundaries of the service and respect a person’s decision to stop. Do not promise to cure conditions or attribute clinical benefits to a relaxation session. Decide how the team will respond when an enquiry falls outside its competence.
Correction to the earlier article
The earlier Spanish version mixed relaxation massage, health claims and an erotic-service business, attributing commercial success without financial evidence. Those conclusions and the commercial recommendation have been removed. This article does not establish that opening a centre is cheap, profitable or suitable for everyone. For planning a limited trial of an activity, see our guide to exploring extra income.
