AI and intimacy: privacy, consent and boundaries

An AI conversation can feel personal, but that feeling tells you little about where messages are stored or who may access them. When discussing relationships or intimate concerns, separate three questions: what the software says, what the service allows and which personal information you are giving it.

A sympathetic tone is not a qualification

A chatbot is neither a partner nor a healthcare professional. It may help organise questions or rehearse a respectful conversation, but fluent wording does not establish accuracy. Do not treat its answers as a diagnosis or evidence that an activity improves health. Seek appropriate human support when a situation concerns you.

Services have different policies on adult content. Read the current rules rather than assuming every assistant permits explicit sexual conversations. This revision withdraws the earlier article’s unsupported promises about psychological benefits and absolute privacy.

Understand what a privacy setting actually changes

OpenAI says that switching off “Improve the model for everyone” prevents new ChatGPT conversations from being used to train its models; it does not delete saved history. While chats remain temporary, they are not used to improve models, but may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Available controls depend on the account and workspace.

Review memory, shared links and connected applications separately. Remove names, addresses and identifying details about other people before typing. A fictional example is often enough to ask a general question: a complete private message thread usually adds unnecessary personal information.

Do not assume consent to use someone’s image

A photograph being online does not mean its subject agreed to intimate alteration or distribution. Do not upload another person’s private images or create intimate representations without consent. Forwarding harmful material to ask for opinions can spread it further.

In Spain, the AEPD’s Priority Channel provides a route to request urgent removal of unlawfully shared sexual or violent material posing a serious risk to those affected. Check its eligibility criteria and help options. Submitting a request does not guarantee immediate removal.

A useful pause before sending

  • Define your purpose: general information, wording a question or preparing for a conversation.
  • Share as little identifying information as possible and review the service’s settings.
  • Check consequential claims against reliable sources instead of relying on confident phrasing.
  • If the conversation increases distress or displaces support you need, stop and speak with someone you trust.

The most useful boundary is one you decide before disclosing sensitive details, rather than after a long conversation has already been saved.
