Business signs: types, design and installation checks

A business sign should help people find the premises and understand what happens inside. Start by looking at the frontage from the customer’s actual approach: straight ahead, along the pavement and across the street. An expensive material will not rescue lettering that is hard to read.

Choose the format around the task

  • Fascia panel: brings the name and activity together on one surface. Avoid turning it into a complete service catalogue.
  • Raised letters: add depth, but their fixings, shadows and background need consideration.
  • Projecting sign: sits at right angles to the frontage and may help people approaching along the same pavement. Whether it can be installed depends on the location and local conditions.
  • Vinyl graphics: suit compatible surfaces; an adhesive suitable for one wall or window may be unsuitable for another.
  • Illuminated sign: needs a plan for night-time visibility, electrical access and maintenance.

Inspect the surface before specifying materials

3M’s signage guidance distinguishes different applications and materials. Ask the installer to identify the substrate, its condition, exposure and proposed fixing system. A general durability claim is less useful than the product specification and written warranty terms.

Request a scaled mock-up on a real photograph and check the wording from the intended viewing distance. Establish who will handle any required permissions. For Madrid premises, consult the municipal outdoor advertising rules; conditions can differ between municipalities and buildings.

Compare the complete quote

Ask for separate details of design, dimensions, materials, manufacture, installation, access equipment, electrical work where needed, removal of the previous sign, taxes and maintenance. Agree how the final artwork is approved and how changes following the site measurement will be handled.

Will a larger sign bring in more customers?

There is no guaranteed relationship. Readability, position and suitability for the premises matter, and a supplier cannot establish a fixed payback period simply from the sign’s size. Browse our practical guides when planning other improvements to a business.
