The cheapest storage unit may be impractical if your sofa will not fit through the door or the building is closed when you need to visit. Start with what you will store, how often you need access and how long the rental may last. Then compare the full cost of suitable options.
Measure the items and the route
List boxes, furniture and items that cannot be stacked. Measure large pieces and check door width, corridor turns, lifts and loading space. Advertised floor area alone does not explain how much usable storage you will have. For frequent visits, leave an internal aisle and keep everyday items near the entrance.
Access hours are not office hours
Ask separately when you can enter the unit and when staff are available. Continuous surveillance does not necessarily mean round-the-clock customer access. Check how entry works outside office hours and what happens if a code or lift fails.
The HOMEBOX website describes security measures and storage rules, but you still need to check the specific centre. Do not assume every unit has identical alarms, access arrangements or equipment.
Moisture and storage conditions
Inspect the unit’s walls and floor and ask about leaks, ventilation and environmental controls. Indoor storage is not automatically climate-controlled storage. If you have instruments, documents or delicate furniture, explain their requirements and ask what conditions the facility can maintain.
Store items clean and dry, label boxes and keep a photographic inventory. Check the rules before bringing food, liquids, aerosols, batteries or other potentially restricted items. HOMEBOX, for example, publishes restrictions on hazardous and perishable products; read the applicable agreement.
Calculate the cost after the introductory offer
- The normal rental fee and the period it covers.
- Taxes, setup charges, deposit, lock and any access costs.
- Insurance: price, covered belongings, exclusions, limits and excess.
- Minimum term, price-review arrangements and notice to leave.
- Conditions for changing unit size and availability of another unit.
Does CCTV guarantee that nothing will be lost?
No. Surveillance is a precaution, not an absolute guarantee. Ask about incident reporting and the evidence needed for a claim. Do not assume your home insurance automatically covers belongings in external storage.
