Five business ideas and practical ways to test them

A business idea becomes more useful when you ask difficult questions about it. Who would pay? How much work would each sale require? How much could you lose before learning whether it works? These five options are starting points for research, not Spain’s “most profitable” businesses.

1. Marketing with a defined scope

Instead of offering advertising, social media, content and SEO to every business, choose a problem you know how to solve. One example is preparing a content calendar for a shop using materials supplied by the client.

What to test: a specific proposal with defined deliverables and revision limits. What to count: meetings, production, tools and customer acquisition. Separate the client’s advertising budget from your fees. Avoid promising sales or search positions you cannot guarantee.

2. Online retail with costs calculated per order

A shop needs a reason for customers to choose its products. A website alone does not solve sourcing, delivery or support after a purchase.

What to test: interest from a defined audience before committing to substantial stock. What to count: goods, packaging, shipping, payments, returns, advertising and support time. Check the requirements applying to your products and their sale before accepting orders.

3. Specialised virtual assistance

Diary management and administrative support can become clear services when tasks, availability and boundaries are defined. A specialism may help explain your skills; it does not establish that demand exists.

What to test: a limited assignment with a clear handover process. What to count: onboarding, coordination and time available between tasks. Agree how client access and data will be handled without assuming responsibilities you are not authorised to take.

4. Online classes with a specific learning goal

Teaching a subject you know also involves preparing materials, explaining clearly and answering questions. Recording a course does not remove the work of updating it or finding students.

What to test: a pilot class for a defined level and objective. What to count: preparation, teaching, feedback, platform costs and support. Do not advertise official accreditation or guaranteed results unless those claims can be substantiated.

5. Mystery-shopping service evaluations

This model uses agreed visits or interactions to assess aspects of a service. The value for a business lies in consistent reporting, rather than an improvised personal opinion.

What to test: a commissioned project with clear observation criteria and deliverables. What to count: travel, agreed purchases, coordination, evidence checks and reporting. Establish the assignment’s limits and applicable rules before collecting personal information or recording people.

Compare the options on the same basis

For each idea, write down the target customer, proposed price, delivery costs, required hours and a limited trial. Distinguish known facts from assumptions. Decide in advance how much time and money the trial can use and what outcome would justify continuing.

The public DGEIPYME Plan de Empresa tool helps explore viability and financial scenarios. It can organise your assumptions; it does not certify that a venture will succeed.

Correction to the previous article

The earlier Spanish version attributed a 2023 profitability ranking to undocumented research. That ranking, its forecasts and promises of success have been removed. This guide retains the ideas so readers can evaluate them using their own criteria and verifiable information.
