Self-employment: a realistic plan before you make the move

Working for yourself can give you more say in how you deliver a service. It also makes you responsible for finding customers, completing the work and collecting payment. Before leaving a job, understand that whole routine. Flexible hours and higher earnings are not automatic features of self-employment.

Begin with an offer you can explain

Write down whom you help, the problem you solve, what you deliver and what is excluded. “Social media management” is too broad to estimate reliably; defined channels, deliverables and revision limits make it easier to discuss a schedule and price.

A small, agreed project can help you learn whether there is demand. Record the actual hours, including meetings, preparation, revisions and administration. Enquiries and followers are not the same as paying customers.

Work out what you need to charge

Separate your business budget from your personal budget. Include tools, professional advice, relevant insurance, applicable taxes and social contributions, as well as time you cannot bill. Your personal budget shows what you would need to cover if the business became your main income.

Do not simply divide your former salary by every working hour in a month. Some hours will go towards sales, learning, holidays or internal tasks. Spain’s public Plan de Empresa tool helps explore financial viability and different scenarios; its results depend on the information you enter.

Make agreements and payments clear

  • Scope: specify deliverables, revisions and how changes will be priced.
  • Schedule: agree realistic dates and what the client must provide.
  • Payment: define amounts, due dates and documentation. An issued invoice may still be unpaid.
  • Continuity: consider dependence on one customer and your commitments if the relationship ends.

You need not accept every project. Equally, you cannot assume that you can walk away from any commitment immediately. Read the agreement and obtain advice where contractual obligations are unclear.

Check registration before starting

Spanish Social Security explains self-employment registration and says it must be requested before the activity begins. Do not assume that a low income removes your obligations. Establish which registrations, permissions and tax duties apply before accepting paid work.

If you plan to work from another country, also check the residence, work, taxation and healthcare rules relevant to your circumstances. This guide does not establish where you can legally live or work on a particular budget.

Decide using evidence you can observe

Before making the move, ask whether you have delivered work people pay for, whether receipts cover costs and how you would handle quieter months. The appropriate financial reserve depends on expenses, commitments and risk tolerance; there is no universal amount.

The earlier article promised higher earnings, easy passive income and freedom associated with follower counts. Those claims have been removed. Content creation and digital products also require work and do not guarantee sales. Keeping a job while exploring options can be a reasonable choice.
