Looking for free thermal baths in Spain means distinguishing a spring, a public bathing area and a spa selling services. They can be close together and share a name without sharing admission arrangements. This revision corrects an older list that described several sites as free without establishing that distinction.
Outariz: public pools and the thermal centre are different
Ourense’s visitor information distinguishes the free public Outariz and Burga de Canedo pools from the paid Termas de Outariz facilities. Entering “Outariz” in a navigation app is not enough: identify the place you want and its pedestrian access.
The public-pool listing describes outdoor pools beside the Miño and facilities including changing rooms and toilets. That does not guarantee everything will be operating on arrival. Check closures, maintenance notices and river conditions before travelling, and respect barriers and instructions on site.
Montanejos: check the Fuente de los Baños calendar
The tourist office publishes dates when access to Fuente de los Baños is controlled and tickets apply. It should not be promoted as free bathing throughout the year. Check your exact date, children’s admission and any exemptions through the official channel.
Admission to the natural site is also different from a spa service. Establish what you are booking, where you enter and whether the confirmation applies to your chosen date.
Montemayor: a free museum is not a free bath
Balneario de Montemayor advertises a museum with free admission alongside separate thermal services and circuits. Free museum admission does not establish that free outdoor bathing pools exist. For bathing, check the specific service, price and current operating calendar.
Caldes de Boí: priced thermal services
The spa publishes a thermal-service menu with prices. We therefore do not list it as a free bathing option. When planning a trip nearby, distinguish a walk, a hotel stay and a spa circuit: they involve different arrangements and costs.
What about Alhama de Granada?
The earlier article recommended bathing without adequately establishing current access, permission or conditions. We have withdrawn that recommendation as a confirmed plan. Before travelling specifically to bathe, obtain current information from the tourist office or the authority responsible for the site. The presence of thermal water does not itself establish permission to swim.
Before packing
- Check that the area is open and designated for the use you intend.
- Confirm reservations, capacity, permitted ages and supervision rules.
- Check walking access, parking, changing facilities and accessibility requirements.
- Follow the operator’s instructions about water temperature, session length and use of the facilities.
- Have another plan if the site closes or weather or water conditions change.

Does free mean no booking is needed?
