Nickel accounts in Spain: eligibility, opening steps and fees

Before opening an account, check whether its conditions fit your circumstances. For Nickel in Spain, the earlier Spanish article’s broad promise of an account “without residency” was inaccurate and has been withdrawn. Its description of an entirely online process has also been corrected.

Identity documents and residency are different requirements

Nickel’s help page requires a Spanish address and Spanish tax residence, adulthood, valid contact details and current identification. It lists DNI, NIE/TIE and accepted passports; an accepted passport does not waive the other requirements. Spanish DNI holders must use that document. The account is for personal, not professional, use.

Check your circumstances against the official opening conditions. Do not infer your tax residence solely from nationality, an identity document or a temporary stay.

Starting online still involves a Nickel Point

The provider’s published instructions allow you to start online, then visit a Nickel Point with the code you receive, your original identity document and the annual fee. You can also start at the point itself.

It is therefore misleading to promise that every step happens at home and the card automatically arrives by post. Before travelling, check the documents needed for your situation and which location you can use.

The annual fee is only part of the cost

When checked on 23 September 2026, the provider’s price page advertised the classic account at €25 a year. Alternative cards and some transactions can add charges. This is not a monthly subscription or a blanket promise of fee-free services.

Read the fee information document effective from July 2026 against your expected use: cash, payments in other currencies, card choice and possible incidents. Keep the version supplied when you sign up.

Identify the provider, not just the brand

Nickel’s Spanish legal notice identifies Financière des Paiements Électroniques SAS, Sucursal en España, as a payment institution, number 6893, using segregated accounts to safeguard funds. The previous article loosely called it a bank; a payment institution and a deposit-taking bank are different categories.

Three questions before choosing

Can you meet the eligibility conditions? What would your normal use cost? How would you resolve a problem? Those answers are more useful than an unsupported “best account” label. This guide does not guarantee acceptance of an application. Official sources checked on 23 September 2026. Find more practical information in Buscatea’s guides.
