A suitcase that looks manageable in the bedroom can feel different when crossing a station, boarding and finding your seat. Packing around those three moments helps you choose what to bring and where to put it. Start with the ticket before opening the wardrobe.
Check the particular service
Note the operator, train service and fare. Check each leg of a journey separately. Renfe’s luggage policy distinguishes its general allowance from Avlo arrangements, so do not automatically apply one service’s allowance to another. Read the current policy and booking details before deciding how many bags to take.
Make a short record of permitted pieces, dimensions, weight and any luggage extras you have purchased. Include the handbag or backpack you plan to use on board. For sports equipment or unusual items, read the operator’s separate conditions.
Try the suitcase fully packed
Put in everything you intend to take, close it without forcing it and check the outside dimensions, including protruding parts. Use suitable scales if your service has a weight limit. A retailer’s “cabin” label does not replace the measurements required for your train.
Carry the complete set a short distance at home. The question is what you can handle comfortably, as well as what fits. If you need assistance, contact the operator in advance and check its arrangements. Do not assume another passenger or member of staff will carry your bags.
Separate what you will use at your seat
Prepare a small bag within your permitted allowance for the things you will actually use: ticket, documents, reading, headphones or a cable. Avoid burying an item at the bottom of the suitcase if you will need it as soon as you sit down. Keep valuables and journey essentials with you.
For a two-night trip, try starting with two outfits whose pieces work together, then add clothing for your activities and the weather forecast. This is a selection exercise, not a universal packing list. Adapt it to personal needs and the facilities your accommodation actually offers.
Plan for the other end
Before leaving, locate the destination station, onward transport and luggage storage if needed. Check availability and conditions directly. Leave sensible room for anything you might bring home; baggage conditions apply on the return journey too.
Do I need a new suitcase?
