Taking a dog on a train in Spain starts with choosing the operator and exact service: there is no single rule for every company. Weight limits, carriers, reservations and documents vary. This guide compares official conditions checked on 29 October 2026; confirm the rules for your ticket before travelling.

Renfe: distinguish carriers from the option for dogs up to 40 kg

On several services, Renfe accepts small pets up to 10 kg in a carrier no larger than 60 × 35 × 35 cm, subject to the train and ticket. The pet ticket and charge depend on service and fare.

Renfe also offers places for dogs up to 40 kg without a carrier. The train must show that the option is available; do not assume every connection or combined ticket qualifies. A separate add-on is required and places are limited. Check Renfe’s published exclusions for age, breed and the dog’s condition, plus its document, lead and muzzle requirements for station access and boarding.

OUIGO: closed carrier and its own limits

OUIGO allows up to two pets per purchase and journey, with a maximum 15 kg per animal, in a rigid waterproof carrier no larger than 60 × 35 × 35 cm. It must stay closed and fit under the seat. OUIGO also lists age, identification, health-document, parasite-treatment and vaccination requirements. Add your pet to the booking and check the current conditions before travel.

iryo: add the service and check the train

For a pet up to 10 kg, iryo specifies a carrier up to 60 × 35 × 35 cm and advance purchase of the service. The Infinita Bistró fare includes the add-on; other fares may charge extra. iryo also provides for dogs over 10 kg through advance booking, with service-specific conditions and availability. Check the route, time and large-dog requirements before paying.

One operator’s rules do not automatically apply to another. A carrier that meets one company’s measurements does not confirm that your pet is added to the chosen train.

Booking and station checklist

  1. Choose the operator and check each leg, including connections and replacement services.
  2. Weigh your dog and measure the packed carrier; check where it must go and whether it must stay closed.
  3. Add the pet during checkout or arrange a special booking through the official channel. Keep the confirmation.
  4. Prepare the identification and health documents required for your origin, destination and travel option.
  5. Bring a lead, water and cleaning supplies. Check when a muzzle is required.
  6. Before leaving, reopen your booking and confirm the time, station, carriage and current instructions.

If crowds or noise stress your dog, talk to your vet before a long journey and practise with the carrier. Do not give sedatives on your own. If your dog does not meet the conditions or places are unavailable, choose another service rather than expecting an exception.

To plan the walk after arrival too, you can prepare an offline map before the journey.

Frequently asked questions

Can any dog travel on any train?

No. The operator, service and route determine which animals are accepted, what booking is required and how many places are available.

Can a large dog travel without a carrier?

Renfe and, under specific conditions, iryo provide options for dogs over 10 kg. Confirm the exact train’s availability; OUIGO sets its own limit and requires a carrier.

Can I buy the pet add-on at the station?

Do not assume so. Some options require advance booking and places can sell out. Follow the channel and deadline shown by the operator.
