A painting job in central Madrid starts well before the first tin is opened. Wall condition, furniture and building access can all change the work involved. A site visit and an itemised quote make it easier to compare like-for-like offers.
Inspect the surface first
Point out cracks, flaking paint, stains and loose areas. Where damp is present, ask for its cause to be identified before covering it. Titan’s guidance on damp and staining explains why the source of the problem matters. Painting over a mark does not establish that a leak has been repaired.
Agree the preparation required, such as cleaning, repairs, sanding or primer. Removing textured paint, coating woodwork and repainting a smooth wall are different jobs. Unknown older materials should be assessed before sanding or removal.
Test the colour in the room
Ask for a sample on the intended surface and inspect it in daylight and artificial light. Record the colour reference and finish. Check cleaning and durability properties in the product information; a label such as “premium” does not explain them.
Ask about the manufacturer’s ventilation, drying, recoating and use instructions. Dry to the touch does not necessarily mean ready for cleaning or immediate normal use.
Compare a complete written quote
The Community of Madrid’s home improvement guidance explains the importance of specifying the agreed work. Request details of surfaces, preparation, product, finish, taxes, timing and additional work. Clarify who protects floors and furniture, removes fittings and deals with waste.
For a central-city building, confirm material access, lift arrangements, agreed building hours and how the project will be phased if the premises remain occupied. At handover, inspect edges, junctions, coverage and cleaning with the contractor. Keep the quote and invoice.
Can a room be priced without a visit?
