A good sofa for a small living room lets you sit comfortably while keeping the rest of the room usable. Check its footprint, any space needed for opening mechanisms and the delivery route before choosing by seat count.
Furniture can look perfectly proportioned in a showroom. At home, an oversized arm might occupy the very space you use to reach the balcony. Before settling on a model, spend an afternoon drawing your room as you actually use it.
Make three separate checks
- The footprint: record width, depth and nearby obstacles, including doors, radiators and furniture you already own.
- The working space: think about feet, reclining sections, fold-out beds and everyday routes through the room.
- The delivery: check the building entrance, lift, stairs, turns and doorways all the way to the final position.

Try the layout before buying
Mark the candidate’s outline with paper or tape suitable for your floor. Walk from the door to the window, open cupboards and pull out dining chairs. If you keep sidestepping the outline, try a shallower sofa or rethink the nearby table.
Next, imagine an ordinary evening: somebody is reading, someone walks in carrying a tray and a visitor needs a seat. A floor plan should work when life is happening, not only when everything is tidied away.

A shorter sofa does not necessarily provide less seating: look at how much width the arms occupy. A modular design is not automatically suitable either. Draw the exact combination you intend to order.
Judge comfort while sitting down
If you can try the sofa, sit as you do at home. Notice whether your feet are supported, whether the back feels comfortable and how easy it is to stand up. Bring the person who will share it: different preferences are easier to resolve before delivery.
Ask about cleaning, removable covers and delivery and return arrangements. Record the model, fabric, orientation and dimensions on the quote so you compare like for like.
