Startups in Spain: how to assess a service’s innovation

People meeting around a table with a laptop

The word startup is applied to very different businesses at different stages of growth. To understand their innovation, examine what changes for the user instead of accepting a “best companies” list without a date, criteria or comparable evidence.

Begin with the problem, not the label

Ask which task was difficult and what the service improves: finding supply, comparing terms, booking, paying or coordinating delivery. A convenient app can still involve high costs or poor support when something goes wrong. Assess both the routine experience and the exceptions.

Two models that suggest useful questions

Cabify presents mobility services for passengers and businesses. Practical questions concern availability in your city, the vehicle category, the price displayed and booking or cancellation conditions. A platform’s existence does not mean every option is available everywhere.

Spotahome provides a platform for finding and booking rental accommodation. Read the individual listing for the permitted stay, payments, deposit, utilities and conditions. The service’s protections and checks may have requirements; they should not be turned into unconditional promises about every property.

These are examples of digital business models, not a current startup ranking or a recommendation to book. No particular business certification is assumed.

What emerging-company certification means

ENISA manages Spain’s emerging-company certification associated with Law 28/2022. Its requirements cover company conditions and an innovative, scalable business model, among other matters. This administrative status is not an award for the best product and does not guarantee profitability or the quality of every customer experience.

A short comparison sheet

  • Need: what the service solves and for whom.
  • Availability: city, country, dates and restrictions.
  • Full cost: fees, renewals and additional charges.
  • Trial: what you can check before committing.
  • Problems: support channels and cancellation rules.
  • Data: what information is required and how to retrieve it.

Does more funding mean a better service?

Funding alone cannot establish that. Investment, company size and the user experience are different dimensions. When choosing a supplier, test the process you actually need and retain the terms you accept. A successful trial should include a realistic exception, such as changing a reservation or asking a detailed support question. Explore further guides to comparing services.
