Offline maps: download and test them before your trip

An offline map is useful only if it covers your journey and supports the kind of directions you need. Downloading one before a trip is the easy part. The valuable check is opening it with the phone temporarily in airplane mode while you can still solve a problem at home.

Imagine arriving by train with a low battery. You need the station exit, your accommodation and perhaps another route if the first exit is closed. A tiny saved area can show the station while omitting the last part of the walk.

Start with the whole journey

Write down the starting point, destination and any changes of transport. Include likely station exits and the final streets. Download the area over Wi-Fi and check its storage size. Offline maps are unavailable in some regions, so do not assume every destination offers the same option.

What Google Maps can and cannot do offline

Google’s Android instructions explain how to open Offline maps from the profile menu, choose your own area and download it. The iPhone version offers the corresponding area selection. Check your stored maps and update them before they expire.

Google states a limitation that matters to city visitors: walking, cycling and public-transport directions are not available offline. Driving directions require the entire route to remain inside the saved area and lack live traffic and alternate routes. Seeing streets on screen is not the same as having walking navigation.

Apple Maps on a compatible iPhone

Apple describes offline maps for iOS 17 and later. Search for a place or use Offline Maps, resize the selected area and download it. In supported areas Apple offers offline directions for driving, walking, cycling and public transport. Availability and details vary by region, so check the mode on your own device.

A practical two-minute test

  1. Open the saved area and confirm it includes the station, accommodation and connecting streets.
  2. Switch on airplane mode briefly, reopen the app and inspect the map at a usable zoom.
  3. Try the specific travel mode you need. If it fails, save written directions or an official station plan as well.
  4. Reconnect, check for map updates and look up current transport information before leaving.

An offline map cannot confirm a new road closure, a platform change or today’s service disruption. Our day-trip ideas near Madrid offer a useful reminder to plan the return timetable as well as the route out.

Is a screenshot enough?

It can preserve an address or a simple station plan, but it does not give you a browsable area at several zoom levels. Keep both when the final approach is unfamiliar.
