Induction cookware: check the base before buying a new set

Changing the cooker can make replacing every pan seem like the obvious next step. First, take out the pans you actually use and examine them individually. Induction compatibility depends on details that a catalogue photograph may not show.

The base material matters

Bosch explains that induction requires ferromagnetic cookware and suggests testing whether a magnet sticks to the base. It also says the ferromagnetic base should correspond to the cooking-zone size. Treat the magnet test as an initial check alongside the manufacturer’s description and your hob’s manual.

Inspect the pan when cold and clean, away from the hob. Note its product reference and photograph the markings underneath. Ask about the exact model if details are missing; “stainless steel” alone does not settle every compatibility question.

Measure the relevant part

Keep the top diameter and base diameter separate in your notes. When reading a product listing, check which measurement it gives. Bring the hob’s model reference and zone instructions too, so a retailer can compare actual specifications instead of guessing which appliance you own.

Think about the combination you normally use. A pan may fit well by itself but become awkward next to another with wide handles. With the cooker off, check space, access to controls and positioning against the appliance instructions.

Choose around meals you actually make

Write out an imaginary week of cooking: perhaps a casserole, a pasta dish and a stir-fry. Identify the pan you would use for each and the number of portions you need. That can reveal one missing item before you buy a set containing pieces destined to stay in the cupboard.

Consider how the empty pan feels to hold, where you will store the lid and handles, and the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. If you finish dishes in the oven, check the oven suitability of the pan, handles and lid separately. Induction compatibility does not establish that.

What if the hob does not detect a pan?

Consult the relevant manual section and check compatibility, size and position. Do not improvise with accessories or adapters without the manufacturers’ approval. Avoid heating empty pans as an experiment; follow the operating instructions.
