A day outside Madrid does not need to become a race through several towns. Choose a destination for the experience you want: stone streets, a palace visit, or a leisurely square and lunch. These eight suggestions are alternatives, not a single itinerary to complete in one day.
Six are in the Community of Madrid. La Granja is in Segovia province, and Brihuega is in Guadalajara province. Being within reach of the capital does not make every destination part of the Madrid region.
1. Buitrago del Lozoya: walls beside the river
The walled historic centre and the River Lozoya shape this visit. Focus on the old streets and views across the water. Check access arrangements for individual sections of the walls: seeing the fortifications from outside is different from entering every part of them.
2. Chinchón: take time around the square
Start with Plaza Mayor, its arcades and wooden balconies. Explore the surrounding streets instead of stopping only for a photograph. If you want lunch overlooking the square, confirm where your table will be; a restaurant reservation does not automatically secure a balcony seat.
3. Patones de Arriba: slate-built streets

5. Cercedilla: choose a trail deliberately
The municipal website brings together walks in the Fuenfría valley. Choose according to distance, ascent and available time; a woodland photograph does not establish difficulty. Check conditions for the day and leave a buffer for returning. Exploring the town itself is another option if you do not want a hike.
6. San Lorenzo de El Escorial: a cultural outing
The Royal Monastery is the main draw, bringing together palace, basilica and library spaces. Before building your day around a particular room, check the available route and tickets. Leave time to explore the town rather than expecting to see everything in one morning.
7. La Granja de San Ildefonso, in Segovia
The palace and gardens offer different ways to spend the day. Patrimonio Nacional publishes access information and fountain-display schedules separately: garden admission does not mean the fountains will be operating. Check for changes to the palace’s indoor route too.
8. Brihuega, in Guadalajara
Lavender is seasonal. Castilla-La Mancha’s tourism service identifies July as the peak period for the flowering landscape. Outside that season, focus on the town and its heritage. Do not expect purple fields throughout the year or enter cultivated land without permission.
Before leaving Madrid
