A guide to well-known bullfighters is more useful when it explains its sources than when it declares someone the greatest in the world. These three profiles provide a documented starting point, not a popularity ranking or a complete history of bullfighting.
The archive photograph provides general context. We do not identify the person pictured as any of the individuals discussed below.
Manolete: the injury and death occurred on different dates
Spain’s archival portal PARES records his birth in Córdoba on 4 July 1917 and his death in Linares on 29 August 1947. The fatal goring by Islero took place during his final bullfight on 28 August. Saying simply that he died in the ring merges two different moments.
The same record dates his alternativa to Seville in July 1939 and its confirmation in Madrid to October. Those details offer a clear starting point for a timeline without presenting opinions about his style as undisputed facts.
Juan Belmonte: a life encountered through literature
Spain’s National Library identifies Juan Belmonte with the dates 1892–1962 and holds catalogued portraits. Another route into his story is Manuel Chaves Nogales’s Juan Belmonte, matador de toros; the publisher Alianza Editorial provides opening pages from its edition.
A biography’s narrative should be distinguished from a record of dates. Reading both kinds of source lets you ask who is telling the story and which elements come from documents, memories or interpretation.
El Juli: a debut is not an alternativa
The official Las Ventas profile records Julián López’s birth in Madrid on 3 October 1982. It dates his debut with picadors to Mexico on 16 March 1997 and his alternativa to Nîmes on 18 September 1998. He was fifteen at the latter milestone, but it was not his first performance.
How to investigate other names
- Search for a full name alongside the professional nickname to avoid confusing individuals.
- Distinguish birth, debut, alternativa, confirmation and final performance.
- Check a photograph’s date and attribution before identifying its subject.
- Treat descriptions of greatness or style as opinions unless a measurable criterion is explained.
An earlier version included additional biographies without sufficient references. This revision limits the selection to the documented profiles and removes ticket buying as an assumed next step. You can explore this history through archives, books and museums without attending a performance.
